Information about this type of wood:
Freshly sawn wenge has a light yellow-brown color. Exposed to light, the wood quickly turns dark brown. Panga panga is generally a lighter color than wenge and turns uniformly brown with fine light-colored stripes. The xylem vessels or pores of panga panga are sometimes filled with a yellow substance. This substance never occurs in wenge, in panga panga it occurs in varying quantities or sometimes not at all. If there is an excess of yellow ingredients, the wood will be marred on the longitudinal surface by yellow stripes, dots or spots. The sapwood is 25-50 mm wide and has a yellow-white color. In wenge, the fibrous tissue has a black color and the parenchyma tissue has a (light) brown color. Both tissues occur in alternating, approximately parallel webs. This creates a regular pattern of black and brown stripes on quarter-sawn wood, while plain sawn wood is beautifully flamed brown-black. When wenge is exposed to direct sunlight for a long time, it becomes lighter in color again. The black wood then turns dark brown and the brown areas yellow brown. When used outdoors, wenge should be treated with a surface finisher as the dark-colored ingredients dissolve in water and can stain underlying materials.
